Article Name : | | THE MENTAL AND PHYSICAL HEALTH OF PROSTITUTION WOMEN IN NAGPUR | Author Name : | | Alka A. Sarode | Publisher : | | Ashok Yakkaldevi | Article Series No. : | | ISRJ-395 | Article URL : | | | Author Profile | Abstract : | | Nagpur is an industrial hub in Maharashtra, having the second highest HIV prevalence in the country. Approximately 3000 brothel-based women in prostitution are estimated to be working in the red light area. Some of these women and girls suffer from mental illness like depression. These women suffer from gynecological problems; diseases of the uterus, STDs including HIV/Aids, miscarriage, pelvic inflammatory disease, chronic pelvic pain, headaches, asthma, tuberculosis, irritable bowel syndrome, etc. Brothels are run by former sex workers or gharwalis, who are reluctant to send the young girls for treatment to hospitals on day to day basis. Free periodic medical health check up, free blood testing and anti-retroviral therapy must be arranged free of cost for them since majority of them are very poor and lack social support. Arrangement of meaningful vocational training should be arranged on the part of the Government and the NGOs’ for imparting alternate source of earning and thereby assisting them to start something providing information about various sources of financial support. | Keywords : | | - prostitution
