Abstract :
The importance of various forms of physical activity and exercise for the enhancement of health in general and mental health in particular is so pronounced. Keeping this in mind the present study aims to compare “mental health status” of physical education (PE) and non-physical education (NPE) students. Fifty students (25 PE and 25 NPE) of LCC, Lucknow were taken as the subjects of the study. The age of the subjects were ranged from 17 to 24 years. PE students were those who are undergoing B.P.Ed. course and NPE students were those who are studying in any undergraduate course at LCC, Lucknow. The mental health status of the subjects was measured by using Mental health checklist (MHC) constructed by Kumar (1992). MHC is a self administering inventory and it was administered individually to the students in their respective classrooms. Scoring was done according to the instruction given in the test manual. The t test was used to compare the mean score of PE students and NPE students. The results of the study indicated that there was significant difference exists between PE students and NPE students at 0.05 level of significance. NPE students scored higher than the PE students on mental health, which demonstrate PE students having a good state of mental health in comparison with NPE students. The result of the study suggested that PE students possesses a good metal health status.
